Funny name, amazing results

do you collect any customer information?

Then you need policies on your website!

Privacy laws are changing all the time around the world. There is the GDPR (Global Data Protection Regulation from Europe), the CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018), and PIPEDA (The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act) just to name a few. Do you know what they contain? Most of the world’s population does not. But failing to abide by these laws can come with serious consequences. Not abiding by the GDPR if you collect information from people living in the European Union can come with a 10 million Euro fine.

That's why it's important to have the right policies!

Privacy Policy

You need a policy explaining what information you collect, how you collect it, how it is used, etc.

Terms of Service

You need a terms of service explaining what people can do when they purchase products or services from you.

A disclaimer is a statement that limits the liabilities that you may be responsible for due to your website.

End User License Agreement

An End User License Agreement or an EULA is an agreement between a software vendor and a user of that software that spells out the rules of using the software.

How To protect yourself?

do it yourself

There are privacy policy generators on the web. A simple search will turn a few of them up. This is a great cheap solution for privacy policies. However, it means you need to check back and re-update it on a regular basis, since privacy laws are always changing. This could very easily turn into a full-time job.

hire a Lawyer

First, you would need to find a lawyer specializing in privacy policy, and that understands, and keeps up to date on changes as they happen. This is an excellent option, but also a costly option. An initial policy would be $1k plus. Reviews of the policy would be cheaper, but they may be needed as often as once a week.

Probably the easiest solution of the three. I personally use a service called Termageddon. Strange name, huh? They are a company that stays up to date on privacy acts and regulations, and has designed customizable privacy policies that will auto-update based on the changing regulations. That means you input your company information one time, answer some questions, and then you have a privacy policy created for you that is stored on their site. You add a little bit of code to your site, and the policy automatically updates anytime there is a change in privacy regulations.
